Dancers

The Djaadjawan Dancers are a traditional female Aboriginal dance group from Yuin Country. The name “Djaadjawan” means “sand” in the Dhurga Language, symbolising a deep connection to the Country. The group, started by Walbunja woman Sharon Mason, includes girls, women, and Elders from multiple generations across Wallaga Lake, Narooma, and La Perouse. Since their formation in 2015 the Dancers have become a prominent Aboriginal performance group within New South Wales.

Sharon’s mother Vivienne Mason was quoted on NITV news saying: “When we go out there, we dance on our Country, we sing, we show that we’re proud of our Culture. I tell the girls you’re black, show it! It’s a beautiful experience. Our dancers are so shy, you wouldn’t get a boo out of them if you scare them, but as soon as the ochre comes on, they transform into someone else and come alive on stage.”

They have participated in the Giiyong Festival since 2018, mentoring other dance groups and creating traditional dance garments that incorporate weaving, feathers, and shell work, an art form blending storytelling and wearable art. The group frequently performs at major festivals and events across Australia.

The Djaadjawan Dancers also use their platform to address important social issues, including family and domestic violence. Their performances and community work aim to raise awareness, foster healing, and empower women. Their dances, such as the Welcome, Healing, and Fishing Dances, are not only storytelling tools but also serve as acts of cultural resilience and social activism, helping to strengthen community and promote cultural survival.
