This project is by and for Yuin people. Yuin Country comprises four language groups including Dharawal, Dhurga, Djiringandj and Dhawa. Due to funding and project team capacity, this project focuses on Dhurga, Djiringandi and Dhawa between Moruya and Eden.
The language boundaries are:
- Dhurga: South of Nowra to Narooma inclusive of Braidwood and Araluen
- Djiringandj: Narooma to Bega inclusive of Bermagui and Wallaga Lake and down to just north of Eden
- Dhawa: Eden to the north-eastern parts of Victoria
A digital keeping place is like an online museum, in this case created by Aboriginal People. The Yuin Digital Keeping Place is a website that will preserve our culture, knowledge and history, and keep it alive for current and future generations.
Because culture is an mportant part of our identity and it shows where we belong. It's important to record this knowledge because our Elders are passing away and we need to preserve it for our future generations. It's also a really important part of truth telling.
The Yuin Digital Keeping Place is a website housing more than 160 short films recorded by the Project Working Group, three language dictionaries (Dhurga, Djiringandi and Dhawa), and cultural and historical documentation drawn from state institutions, local archives, and personal collections.
The Yuin Digital Keeping Place was designed and developed by the Yuin Project Working Group in collaboration with Project Partner and Executive Producer SharingStories Foundation. The project is funded by The National Indigenous Australians Agency and The Australian Government’s Indigenous Languages and Arts Program.
Through invitation by the Guluga and Biamanga Boards of Management, the Yuin Project Working Project was established with ten members between Batemans Bay and Eden, including: Bunja Smith (Batemans Bay), Patricia Ellis (Moruya), Vivienne Mason (Narooma), Lynne Thomas (Narooma), Cheryl Davison (Tilba), Warren Foster (Wallaga Lake), Gary Campbell (Wallaga Lake), Judy Norris (Cobargo), BJ Cruse (Eden) and Lorraine Naylor (deceased).
