Robert “Bob” Brown was a pioneering Aboriginal leader from Wreck Bay, known for his historic appointment as Manager of the Wreck Bay Aboriginal Station in 1954. Before his appointment, Brown had served as a Handyman on the station, demonstrating dedication and capability in the daily running of the reserve. Alongside his wife, who was appointed Matron, Brown became part of the first Aboriginal couple in New South Wales entrusted with the responsibility of managing an Aboriginal station, a milestone celebrated at the time by the NSW Aborigines Welfare Board and documented in Dawn magazine.
During his tenure, Brown oversaw a substantial community infrastructure that included cottages, a school, a dispensary, a boat shed, and services such as electricity and water. He also initiated plans for a co-operative sawmill aimed at providing economic opportunities and greater independence for residents, reflecting his vision for self determination and community development. The Browns’ management was widely recognised as exemplary, and their resignation due to Mrs. Brown’s ill health was noted as the departure of trailblazing leaders in Aboriginal station management.
Beyond his administrative role, Brown was a respected figure within the Wreck Bay community. He was involved in marking the 1952 boundary of the Wreck Bay Reserve, a testament to his commitment to his people and the land. Today, the Wreck Bay Aboriginal Community Council honours his legacy as a foundational figure in the history of the community.
He was the first Aboriginal Justice of the Peace in Australia and was appointed Special Magistrate to deal with remand, bail and summon matters in the Jervis Bay Court.
