Glen Ella is a celebrated former Wallaby whose influence on Australian rugby extends well beyond his playing days. Born in 1958 and raised in Sydney, he emerged from a talented rugby family and rose to prominence as a skilful fullback and fly-half. Ella debuted for the Wallabies in 1982, earning four Test caps and touring with distinction. Known for his sharp game sense and versatility, he was part of a generation of First Nations players whose talent helped reshape Australian rugby. His career also included a strong provincial presence with Randwick, where the Ella brothers became synonymous with creative, fast-running rugby.
After retiring from playing, Ella’s impact deepened through coaching. He served as assistant coach for Australia, Fiji, Canada, and England, including working under Eddie Jones. In 2016, asked about mentoring young backs, Ella said, “I just try to instil the values my family gave me, discipline, respect, and playing for each other”, a philosophy echoed throughout his coaching journey.
Ella has also contributed to community and First Nations rugby pathways. He has been involved in supporting First Nations representation in the sport, participating in programs that celebrate Aboriginal excellence and encourage youth development. His profile on Rugby.com.au highlights the Ella brothers’ broader legacy as cultural leaders, not only elite athletes. Ella’s career is defined by humility, technical insight, and a deep sense of service.
