Monica Canavan, from Bermagui on the South Coast of New South Wales, is recognised not only for her resilience but also for her connection to sport, particularly golf. In the mid-1980s, Monica underwent a life-saving heart transplant, a procedure that placed her among the early transplant recipients in Australia. Despite the challenges of recovery, she demonstrated remarkable determination, embracing life and sport with renewed vigour.

In 1987, Monica represented her community at the 6th World Transplant Games in Innsbruck, Austria. A photograph from her departure at Sydney airport captures the moment, showing her as a determined and hopeful figure, embodying the spirit of perseverance that defines many in the Yuin community. Her participation in these Games highlights her dedication to staying active and engaged, using sport as a platform for recovery and inspiration.

Following this international competition, Monica maintained a passion for golf, she appeared in the Australian Golf Digest in 1989, where she was celebrated for her achievements and her involvement in local golf events. Her story exemplifies resilience and community engagement, values central to the Yuin people’s contributions to Australian society.
