Elders, Resistance Fighters

Percy Mumbler (1907-1991), affectionately called ‘Bing’, was an Aboriginal Elder, activist, and cultural leader from the Yuin Nation. Born at the Wallaga Lake Aboriginal Station, Percy was the son of Biamanga (Jack Mumbler), a respected community Elder and leader, and Gunnal (Rose Carpenter), from the Shoalhaven region. Biamanga’s leadership was recognised in colonial times when authorities awarded him a brass breastplate, but his true authority lay in his role within his community, particularly in initiating young men.

Growing up, Percy faced threats of removal and institutionalisation, but he maintained a deep connection to his Country and culture. As a young man, he performed with the Wallaga Bush Leaf Band at the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. His oral stories and cultural knowledge caught the attention of poet Roland Robinson, who documented Percy’s accounts and helped share his stories nationally. There is also a book about his life: Travelling with Percy: a South Coast Journey by Lee Chittick and Terry Fox.

Percy campaigned tirelessly for better housing, education, health, and land rights. He played a key role in land rights movements, including the formation of the NSW Aboriginal Land Council in 1977, and was instrumental in securing land and cultural sites for his community. In 1984, Wallaga Lake became the first Aboriginal community in NSW to receive land title, with Biamanga Mountain designated as Aboriginal Place.

Known for his warmth, humour, and leadership, Percy was celebrated for his vibrant personality and traditional skills. His legacy endures as a symbol of resilience and cultural survival.
